The first weekend of Athletes Unlimited softball is in the books.
I'm not sure if I am shocked or not, but 37 year old Cat Osterman is the #1 point scorer through the first weekend. Even though Cat went up against some of the best competition in the world, over the weekend Osterman pitched 12 innings, allowed only 6 hits, did not allow a single run, and went 3-0. Osterman earned 144 points from outs, 190 points on won innings, 340 points on won innings and games, and 120 points for 3 #1 MVP selections. Osterman's 604 points were a full 80 points ahead of the 2nd highest point getter Samantha Show. 3 of the top point getters, Osterman, Samantha Show, and Alecia Ocasio, are pitchers. And the only non-pitcher in the top 4 last week, outfielder Victoria Hayward (Canadian), chose Danielle O'Toole with her 1st pick. Looks like pitchers still run the show in fastpitch softball-- no matter what scoring system you are using.
Osterman was the #1 captain heading into week 2 and she used her #1 overall pick drafting her favorite catcher Gwen Svekis. And though few players on the field are more important to a pitcher than her catcher, Svekis held her own offensively this weekend wit a .300 batting average, a home run and 5 RBI.
As noted previously the point scoring system takes some getting used to. Should be interesting this weekend when play resumes....

I find the format very hard to follow, and also hard to get into "rooting" for a specific athlete vs say the "Blue" team with the same roster day in and day out. I applaud those involved in providing a vehicle for women's softball at this elite level. AU has done a wonderful job of marketing across social media etc. Time will tell I guess... right now they are up against NHL, NBA playoffs, and MLB. Tough to compete for market share on television with those events happening at the same time.

I agree on the format. It is difficult to follow and as I mentioned in another post the scoring is complex....and maybe too complex. It will be interesting to see how it plays out over their "season".

2nd weekend
2 weeks in Osterman is still the #1 points earner and the first player to go past 1,000 points. Osterman is a perfect 6-0 over two weekends of play for Athletes Unlimited softball. She also earned MVP points in 4 of 6 games including 2 first place MVP and 2 2nd place MVP.
The 2nd place overall player is former Florida Gator and current Bandits player Aleshia Ocasio. Despite Ocasio's solid play, Ocasio is over 200 points behind with 798. Ocasio is 5-1 and has 2 #1 MVP finishes.
There is no reason to think that Cat won't continue to dominate. She is head and shoulders above the rest of the field so far. We still have 3 weeks of Athletes Unlimited softball left!
I found a highlight of Morgan Howe, former standout Arizona State outfielder, became the first player to score off Cat Osterman in Athletes Unlimited. Howe is more of an singles hitter with a career .380 hitter at Arizona State, but she fully got hold of this Osterman offering and took it waaaaaaaay out of the park. Good show Howe!
I also am a big fan of the team home run celebration, which features teammates crowing the plate as the hitter rounds 3rd, then pantomiming high fives (NOT TOUCHING!) as the player runs through a tunnel of teammates.
