Suspect a few managers and coaches will be scrambling now that they are receiving notice that the new National Qualifier comes with a pretty hefty $650 price tag. The nearly $1700 total ($650 plus $1020) for T1 teams to have a shot to qualify to then write a further $5200 in cheques to attend is a pretty significant-bite out of the budget I do realize several of those costs in the $5200 are bonds but still a lot of scratch to play a little ball.
I have always struggled to understand how T2 gets a qualifier and a pool play grand for $1020 while T1 gets just the grands for the same cost. Shouldn't some of the cost of national qualifier be coming from the $1020 pot?
Tucking the National Qualifier down in Windsor (at a very nice park) makes this a pretty pricey weekend to start with for the 80 plus percent of teams that will stay over. Not knowing whether to book two or three nights coupled with not knowing what the game guarantee or format is on the most expensive tournament in Ontario adds to the challenge. Not knowing whether 2 teams or 6 go on the nationals compounds the challenge of whether to attend. A three-game guaranteed pool play on a $650 tourney in the furthest corner of the province for only a couple nationals spot might not be worth it for many.....but a 6 gg for 6 or 8 spots might be more worth it.....it would be nice to know prior what it is you are agreeing to take on.
Hopefully, if they are charging the highest tourney entry in the province for this they are at minimum compensating the host their full park rental fee and not leaving the host on the hook to subsidize this event the way most who host provincial events are expected to do.
The National Qualifier approach is a step in the right direction but this current model needs a little more tweaking.
