Not at Canadian Universities and a rather token amount at Canadian Colleges (SFU excepted)
A post regarding scholarships can be found under the College/University thread near the bottom of the forum page
Not yet for Fastpitch but a considerable amount now for other varsity sports.
en.cis-sic.ca/information/members_info/pdfs/pdf_research_and_stats/13-14/SportBySportAFA_2013-14_-public-.pdfThere was also a five year pilot program initiated for women's hockey in 2014 that was to allow the AFA amount to go up to the level of tuition and room and board.
Bigger question is why are curling and field hockey getting varsity level funding while Fastpitch is not - where have we been failing to make the case for our sport ?
There are some general questions that aspiring student athletes likely should be asking. Universities should have these stats readily available to you and I would be suspicious if they don't:
- What is the Student Athlete Development Program like (what academic supports to they give them)
- What is the average GPA of student athletes compared to the average GPA of the general student population
- Graduation rate for student athletes compared to the general student population (same as above)
- Number of student-athletes who ended their year on academic probation (should be low with a decline in pattern over time).
- Similarly, student-athletes who were required to withdraw at the end of each year
- You can ask for results of student athlete surveys of themselves, coaches, facilities, athlete services & community engagement, etc (essentially their satisfaction).
