Will players be asked to shift their academic focus to softball for an opportunity to play 20 games of fall ball and maybe a medal?? This would seem like a great disservice. As I cannot see any schools or coaches actually promoting such a thing that leaves this as a simple CA$H GRAB!! Waterloo puts on wonderful tournament to raise funds for their program and are quite forthright in their intent. We can and do respect that and support it. This seems more like a marketing sales pitch aimed at our pocket books.

This looks like a good oportunity for girls that want to study here to meet some coaches and show them who they are.

The girls know most of these coaches as they largely coach rep ball as well. The pitch here is "Prospects Camp" and it's not. The girls should enroll in the program and the school they wish to attend. Any coach will welcome them to campus well in advance and introduce them the the team and the facilities. We've done this ourselves. They would have a better experience going one on one rather than being one of 50 trying to spend time with the 2 or 3 coaches of the schools they plan on applying to. Highly inefficient!
Call it a skills camp if you wish to raise funds for the host university but don't misrepresent this as anything else.

This event was pretty well attended and from the girls on my team that attended last year they seemed to feel it was of some value. Hopefully as it gets closer more of the attending coaches will be named as they were last year.
For lots of players in their final years of high school this is a stressful anxious period awaiting acceptances and figuring out where to go to school. If this event isn't what you are looking for fine, but the cost is a small fraction of heading south to a US showcase. If it helps a few kids figure out which schools are fits, or sometimes equally important, which ones are not, then it's probably money well spent.
College choices are very personal with all kinds of different factors involved in the decision making process...having more options like this to help can't be a bad thing.

Speaking on behalf of the University of Waterloo... we welcome the opportunity to get to meet players from across Ontario at an event like this. No where else can myself and some of the current Warrior athletes get in front of 100+ softball players who potentially may have interest in a University of Waterloo program in the future. Each off-season we have to look at gaps and holes in our roster and try and find incoming students to fill those voids. It can be difficult with no incentive to entice players, aside from the academic virtues of your school vs the lure of the US and in some cases real monetary value .
This event allows us to try and sell Waterloo as a school that can provide a great career path for softball athletes. We like many other programs will be there to provide info on not only the softball program, but more importantly the degree programs, co-operative education programs, and more that we can offer to students considering post-secondary studies in the next number of years.
Getting in front of a grade 10 or 11 athlete isn't a bad thing... as that short conversation can get their mind/sights set on working hard to get into the academic program of their choice. We look forward to seeing some new and some of the same athletes as we did last winter to hear what they may be considering in the future.
