I would appreciate any feedback. Here are my uninformed thoughts on this topic. Please enlighten me.
My only guess: SFU does not have enough competing schools in BC to create a competitive league.
What I have ruled out as a reason: 1) proximity to NCAA schools. Ruled out because Ontario schools are actually closer to NCAA schools. ( think MI,OH,PA,NY ) Ontario schools would have both more neighbouring NCAA schools and slightly shorter driving times. 2) Climate. Nope - if all those schools in NY & OH & MI & PA can play in the NCAA with their climate then so can Ontario
And what about Talent. Maybe Ontario does not have the talent to join the NCAA? I do not know enough to speak to that point.
And a second question: MONEY - where does SFU get the money to travel to the various tournament locations? Australia, Hawaii, Alabama...

Here’s a good article on SFU’s overall NCAA Division 2 experience. It doesn’t specify softball but does show the challenges that they are trying to overcome competing with US teams. Note that all SFU’s teams are in the NCAA. It sounds like a daunting challenge for a University President to undertake so I can understand why we don’t see more in Canada. www.cbc.ca/1.4267951
