Japan and the IOC just announced that the 2020 games are officially postponed until 2021.
According to USA Today , the 2020 Olympic games will be postponed. Per the article, there is no decision on when the games will take place as dates for 2021 are still being finalized. The games WILL go on as there are no plans to cancel the Olympics outright. This sentiment was expressed by the IOC and Shinzo Abe, the Prime Minister of Japan.

Finally the IOC puts health and safety ahead of their bottom line. I personally know members of the national team and I couldn't imagine working your whole life for this dream and goal of representing your country in the sport you love then have it taken away from you because your country is doing the right thing and the IOC was not. At least now these athletes can continue to train and prepare for the games just at a later date. If I had to bet I'd say the IOC was pretty much forced to do it because you can't hold Olympic games with no countries willing to compete. I'm glad we will eventually get to see our team go for the gold
